Prime season Possible Avoid

May–June is the season; by July the lower glacier turns slushy and crevasse bridges weaken. Arctic latitude means summit temperatures below −30 °C even in season.

The mountain

The West Buttress is technically moderate — cramponed slopes, fixed lines on the headwall, an exposed ridge to high camp — but Denali is an expedition in the fullest sense: you fly onto a glacier, haul sleds between camps, dig in against storms, and operate for weeks in some of the coldest conditions in mountaineering. Altitude bites harder here too; the high latitude makes 6,190 m feel closer to 7,000 m.

Safety & navigation

A fully self-supported expedition: haul everything by sled between camps, cache food, and pack waste out in a CMC. Extreme cold — expedition down and double boots despite 6,190 m. A starting point generated from this climb's difficulty, altitude, and length — not a substitute for your guide's list or your own judgment. Confirm what your operator supplies before you buy or rent.
