Prime season Possible Avoid

Dry season (November–February) for stable, clear, cold conditions — the same window as Orizaba, which it traditionally precedes as an acclimatisation climb.

The mountain

Izta's standard La Arista del Sol route traverses the mythical sleeping woman's knees, belly, and breast — a long scramble over 5,000 m with big views of smoking Popocatépetl across the pass. There is little technical difficulty in season, but the route is long, high, and easy to underestimate; many parties overnight at the Grupo de los Cien hut. It is the natural first act of a Mexican volcanoes trip.

Safety & navigation

Seasonal snow and ice on the summit slopes — crampons, ice axe, and helmet are often needed in winter and after storms (the old glaciers are nearly gone). Sleep at a high hut (Altzomoni) or camp; often climbed to acclimatise before Orizaba. A starting point generated from this climb's difficulty, altitude, and length — not a substitute for your guide's list or your own judgment. Confirm what your operator supplies before you buy or rent.
