Prime season Possible Avoid

Late spring (May–early July) has the consolidated snow that makes Avalanche Gulch a classic; by August it degenerates into loose scree and rockfall.

The mountain

Shasta's Avalanche Gulch is the great teaching route of California mountaineering: camp at Helen Lake, start before dawn, and climb a huge, steady snow slope past the Red Banks to a thin-aired summit plateau. Every core skill gets used — cramponing, self-arrest, timing the freeze-thaw cycle, reading rockfall lines below the Heart. Glissading back down is the traditional reward.

Skills you need

  • Self-arrest and crampon technique
  • Snow-condition judgment
  • Big-day endurance

Main hazards

  • rockfall funneled through the gulch
  • altitude
  • spring storms
  • sun exposure on snow

Safety & navigation

A snow-and-ice climb (Avalanche Gulch) with a high camp at Helen Lake. Rockfall zone — keep your helmet on; a summit pass and waste pack-out are required. A starting point generated from this climb's difficulty, altitude, and length — not a substitute for your guide's list or your own judgment. Confirm what your operator supplies before you buy or rent.
