July to September for the normal route via the Stüdlhütte and Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte. The narrow summit ridge queues badly in perfect weekend weather.
The Grossglockner's normal route builds beautifully: glacier approach, rocky scrambling to the highest hut in Austria, then a genuinely narrow snow-and-rock ridge over the Kleinglockner to the cross. The exposure on the final metres surprises people expecting a walk-up — short-roping with a guide is common and sensible. A classic step between first glacier climbs and AD-grade ridges.
