Prime season Possible Avoid

Spring and autumn trekking seasons. Autumn brings the clearest skies; spring is warmer with rhododendrons on the approach.

The mountain

Island Peak is the natural graduation from trekking to mountaineering: two weeks acclimatising along the Everest Base Camp trail, then a summit day that crosses a ladder-and-rope glacier and climbs a 100 m headwall on fixed lines to a ridge with Lhotse's south face filling the sky. The climbing is brief but honest — jumar technique and crampon confidence make the difference.

Skills you need

  • Crampon basics
  • Jumar/fixed-line use
  • Trekking endurance at 5,000 m+

Main hazards

  • altitude
  • crevasses and ladder crossings
  • headwall congestion on busy mornings

Safety & navigation

A trekking peak with fixed lines and sometimes a ladder on the summit headwall. A heavy down jacket suffices — no full down suit needed. A starting point generated from this climb's difficulty, altitude, and length — not a substitute for your guide's list or your own judgment. Confirm what your operator supplies before you buy or rent.
