Prime season Possible Avoid

Two dry windows: January–February (warmer, quieter) and July–October (cooler, busier). Long rains from mid-March to May and short rains in November make trails muddy and views rare.

The mountain

Kilimanjaro is the most accessible of the Seven Summits: a walk-up through five climate zones, from rainforest to arctic summit ice. No ropes or crampons are needed on the standard routes, but almost 6,000 m of altitude is a serious opponent — success rates track directly with how many acclimatisation days you buy. Routes like Lemosho and Machame (7–8 days) give far better odds than the 5-day Marangu dash.

Skills you need

Safety & navigation

Porters carry your duffel (typically a 15 kg limit) — pack a daypack for the day's water, layers, and camera. A starting point generated from this climb's difficulty, altitude, and length — not a substitute for your guide's list or your own judgment. Confirm what your operator supplies before you buy or rent.
