Prime season Possible Avoid

Official season is early July to early September, when huts open and trails are snow-free. Off-season ascents are genuine winter mountaineering and frequently fatal for the unprepared.

The mountain

In season, Fuji is a long switchbacked walk up volcanic gravel, traditionally timed to reach the crater rim for goraikō — sunrise. The classic plan sleeps a few hours in an eighth-station hut and summits in the dark among headlamp streams. It is crowded, stark, and unforgettable in equal measure. Altitude touches many climbers despite the modest height, because the ascent is so fast.
